Trinidad Express :: 02.10.2013

Jamaican sprinters Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce have been shortlisted among 10 male and 10 female athletes for the 2013 World Athlete of the Year Award.

The IAAF announced yesterday that an email poll involving the “World Athletics Family” has begun and will close at midnight on Sunday, October 27.

Three male and three female finalists will be selected and announced by the IAAF when the voting process is over.

The male and female winners will be announced by The Council of the International Athletic Foundation on stage during the 2013 World Athletics Gala on Saturday, November 16.

Bolt and American Allyson Felix are the 2012 male and female World Athletes of the Year.

Meanwhile, Bolt will run a 100 metres exhibition race on a track laid down on the iconic 9 de Julio Avenue in central Buenos Aires in December, local media reported yesterday.

The Jamaican world sprint champion, winner of six Olympic gold medals from the 2008 and 2012 Games, will take part in the race on December 7 or 13, said the daily La Nacion’s sports website.

“Bolt is very excited about visiting us. He will be coming with three other Jamaican runners,” Argentine entrepreneur Guillermo Marin was quoted as saying on www.canchallena.com.ar.

Marin also said Serena and Venus Williams, winners of multiple grand slam tennis tournaments, would play an exhibition match in Argentina in December but gave no further details.
